Looking For a Great Volunteer Opportunity?

Apply to Coach Basketball with the Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League!

The Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League (PVYBL) is one of the largest recreational youth sports leagues in the South Bay area, with over 1,500 kids from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade participating. Each season we select a number of high school-aged volunteers to coach youth teams. It's fun, fast-paced, and a great way to volunteer for your community and gain leadership skills.

How It Works

Apply by sending an email to YouthVolunteer@PVYBL.com. Tell us about any youth coaching experience you have in any sport as well as specific basketball playing or coaching experience. Let us know if you'd like to coach alone or with friends (many volunteers choose to coach with one or two other friends, which makes the experience even more fun.). Also let us know what grade you prefer to coach (K through 8th grade). See below for more detail on coaching different grades.

Time Commitment

For Upper Division teams (3rd grade boys and 4th grade and older boys & girls), you will run one 1-hour practice per week and coach one 1-hour game each weekend. The practice time can be at a day and time of your choosing.

For Lower Division teams (K through 2nd grade boys & girls and 3rd grade girls), the commitment is only one hour per week, always on a weekend.

Do I Need to be a Basketball Pro?

Not really. A strong knowledge of basketball is helpful when coaching Upper Division teams as these are competitive games culminating in a championship tournament. Lower Division coaches require less specific basketball knowledge. We also provide coaching clinics and mentors to help you succeed.

What Qualifications are Required?

You must be excellent at working with children, positive, upbeat and friendly. You must be organized and detail-oriented as you'll have to send weekly emails to parents detailing the week's schedule. You must be responsive to league organizers and team parents. And you must have a least a basic working knowledge of basketball skills.

When is the Season?

Our season runs from December through the end of February. Significant hours will be required starting in mid-October as teams are drafted and practices begin.

Will Training Be Provided?

Yes! The mandatory Coaching Clinic and Youth Volunteers Meeting will occur before the next season.
